Patrícia Kaplánová Abstract This article explores the current relations between the most influential political actors in global politics by demonstrating that the European Union is a relevant foreign policy player. Clarifying the development of the European Common Foreign and Security Policy, regarding to the closer cooperation with North Atlantic Treaty Organization and also with the United States of America in the field of defence policy, the main finding is that except of the negative European integration, the European Community has a potential to create a closer political union. The main assumption of this paper is that the cooperation between the NATO and the EU has shown that in the field of hard politics the main role is still under the influence of the NATO/the USA. On the other hand, in the field of soft policy of economic and humanitarian support, the crucial role remains in the competence of the European Union.
